For the past years that I am studying law, I have learned that the Supreme Court’s rulings on various issues changes like the weather. It is normal considering the various factors involved like the retirement of old justices and the appointment of new ones with fresh ideas and a different interpretation of the law, changes in the political situations which can be a factor in the rulings and some other factors affecting the views, opinions and conclusions of the justices handling the case.
But I guess it doesn’t matter if the ruling changes as long as there are no hidden but obvious political agendas under the guise of a reasonable application of law. The Judiciary is an independent and co-equal department of the government. Its existence shouldn’t be mired by any controversy or acts that could questioned the integrity, impartiality and independence of its legal giants that are at the helm of its ship. The citizens are relying on these factors that made them confident into thinking that it is unsinkable.
We should not let the current President appoint the new Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. The said action is tainted with political color. Letting the President appoint Chief Justice Puno’s successor would create doubt in the minds of the citizens of the independence of the Supreme Court.
Respect the citizen who relies on the impartiality of the court at all times, sans personal agendas and the like. Every member of the court owed it to the citizen, for without it, the Judiciary would just be just t, a department who doesn’t deserve its name. Uphold the integrity of the judiciary.
